Starting School For The First Time In Nursery
Starting school is a very important time for you, your child and the school. We very much look forward to welcoming new families and working together to make the transition smooth and rewarding.
In the term prior to your child’s entry, we will invite you into school to have a taste of what the class looks like in action and meet the class teachers. This will help you and your child become familiar with the surroundings and routines of school and raise any questions you may have. You will also have the opportunity to meet other families who are starting school for the first time too.
Pupils will be admitted to Llandeilo Primary School on a part time basis the term after your child’s 3rd birthday. A part time place is two hours in the morning from 9am till 11am or two hours in the afternoon from 1pm till 3pm. We work in partnership with Twts Tywi who offer wrap around care before and after the part time sessions.
A full time place is allocated the term of your child’s 4th birthday.
The Early Years Curriculum is grounded in active learning. Through practical activities, purposeful play and talk, pupils develop an understanding of the world and the basic concepts they will need for their later learning. Parents can play a major role in fostering good attitudes to learning, developing language skills and promoting good behaviour. The Foundation Stage develops children’s personal, social and emotional well-being, promotes positive attitudes and dispositions towards their learning; provides opportunities to develop social skills as well as developing language and communication, reading and writing, maths, knowledge and understanding of the world; and physical and creative development.
Twts Tywi Contact Information
We are proud to work in partnership with Twts Tywi who offer a pre-school childcare service as well as wrap around care. This allows children to who attend morning or afternoon sessions to be safely picked up or returned to the setting.
Joining Our School After Nursery Age
Sometimes children join our school later on in their school life.
We make every effort to ensure they are welcomed, looked after, and monitored so that they quickly make friends and can find their way around the school. Teachers give children time to settle in before making an assessment of their academic abilities. This assessment, together with records from the previous school will enable your child to have the best start in our school.
Moving On - Transferring To Secondary School
At the end of primary school, most children transfer to our local secondary school, Bro Dinefwr.
We have strong links with Bro Dinefwr with taster days and visits happening for Year 5 and Year 6 throughout the year aswell as community events. Year 6 pupils will have two full days induction during their final year as part of a transitional programme. This is seen as a very positive process ensuring a smooth transfer.
Admission Arrangements
The deadline for the receipt of applications for admission to a Primary school is the 31st January in the school year before your child is due to start school.
Not getting a place at a school of the parent’s choice can be very upsetting and distressing for the both the parents and the child.
To assist parents and carers and to maximise the possibility of obtaining a place at our school, the Authority has developed an online application form accompanied by supporting documentation to guide parents through the application process.
The system will also allow parents to make application for admission to a nursery or primary school for up to five years in advance which assists us and the Authority with the forward planning.
